Clearwater Wildlife Tours
On the wild side of the Otago Peninsula, Clearwater Wildlife Tours offers exclusive access to a family-owned farm and private conservation reserve where visitors can experience some of New Zealand's rarest wildlife in its natural habitat. With groups of no more than 10 guests, the experience is personal, relaxed and designed to let nature unfold at its own pace.
The reserve is one of the best places on mainland New Zealand to see endangered hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) in the wild, alongside New Zealand sea lions, fur seals and an incredible variety of native birdlife including royal spoonbills, albatross, kingfishers, herons and stilts. Every tour is different, making each visit a unique wildlife adventure.
Conservation is at the heart of everything Clearwater Wildlife does. The team actively restores native habitat, traps introduced predators, protects sensitive breeding areas and works closely with the Department of Conservation and the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital. Their efforts are making a real difference. Last season, the reserve supported 10 nesting hoiho pairs, making it the only mainland colony in New Zealand to maintain stable nesting numbers, while native birds continue to return in increasing numbers thanks to years of habitat restoration.
More than just spotting wildlife, visitors leave with a deeper appreciation for the incredible work happening behind the scenes to protect these threatened species and the fragile environments they call home.
Fun Fact: Hoiho are the rarest penguin species in the world and are found only in New Zealand. New Zealand sea lions are also the rarest sea lion species on Earth, and despite their relaxed appearance, they're surprisingly fast and playful when racing along the beach.
Top Tip: Slow down and enjoy the moment. Some of the most memorable wildlife encounters happen when you put the camera down, stay quiet and simply watch nature unfold. Bring warm layers, even during summer.
Best Time to Visit: Every season offers something special. Spring is perfect for nesting birdlife and courting hoiho, summer sees more penguins returning from the sea, autumn brings calm conditions and fewer visitors, while winter offers dramatic coastal scenery and active wildlife. Late afternoon tours provide the best chance to see hoiho returning home and beautiful golden light for photography.
