OPERA – Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance

More than just a wildlife experience, OPERA is a working conservation reserve where every visit directly helps protect some of New Zealand's rarest wildlife. Nestled on the Otago Peninsula, the private eco-reserve is dedicated to conservation, rehabilitation, habitat restoration and education, giving visitors a rare opportunity to experience conservation in action.

The reserve is home to a remarkable range of wildlife, including endangered hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins), kororā (little blue penguins), New Zealand sea lions, fur seals, native forest birds and seabirds. As with all wildlife experiences, every visit is different, making each encounter all the more rewarding.

What makes OPERA truly special is that visitors become part of the conservation story. Every tour helps fund predator control, native habitat restoration, penguin monitoring and the reserve's rehabilitation centre, which has cared for more than half of mainland New Zealand's hoiho population. For the team, every penguin successfully released back into the wild is a conservation success, and seeing those birds return to breed in future seasons is the ultimate reward.

Whether you're passionate about wildlife or simply curious to learn more, OPERA offers a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible work being done to give one of the world's rarest penguins a fighting chance.

Fun Fact: Hoiho are one of the rarest penguin species on Earth, with fewer than 400 remaining on mainland New Zealand. They usually nest in native forest and often form long-term partnerships with the same mate.

Top Tip: Wildlife can never be guaranteed, but patience is often rewarded. Dress for the changing coastal weather and bring a camera with a zoom lens to make the most of your visit.

Best Time to Visit: OPERA is worth visiting year-round, with every season offering a different perspective on conservation. Winter is a favourite for many, as lucky visitors may spot hoiho returning from the sea at twilight, while any time of year offers the chance to learn about the vital work happening behind the scenes to protect these remarkable birds.
