Glam Rocks

  • Otago Museum 419 Great King Street Dunedin New Zealand (map)

Featuring examples of crystal, rock, and minerals, our latest exhibition pairs glam rocks with a glam rock-inspired soundtrack.

Tūhura Otago Museum has an extensive rock and mineral collection, and wonderful recent donations that feature in this crossover of geology and music.

Some of the items in the exhibition include crystals with a botryoidal habit, which form real-life natural crystal balls; goodletite, ruby-bearing gemstone found only in New Zealand; and Acid rock, which is occurs naturally as seaweed-bleached basalt.

While you are looking at the stunning minerals, rocks, crystals, you can enjoy this Spotify playlist, with songs selected because a particular lyric highlights the story, appearance or geological process told by the stone. It features glam rock classics from T.Rex, Solid Gold Easy Action and (of course) Queen, Under Pressure

Come and enjoy the visual and auditory sensation on now.
