First Flight Butterfly Release

  • Otago Museum 419 Great King Street Dunedin New Zealand (map)

The most magical time of the day at Tūhura Otago Museum is when our newly-emerged butterflies take their first flight in the Tropical Forest. Every day at 11am we take the brand-new butterflies from the hatching space and release them into the forest where you can watch them flutter together toward the light.

You will learn about the amazing transformation butterflies go through before they take wing for the very first time, and the science of metamorphosis. This is one of the most popular things to do in the Museum; it is a beautiful experience for children and adults alike, and a great chance to get some fantastic photos.
