Mermaid Weaving

  • Dunedin City Library 230 Moray Place Dunedin, Otago, 9016 New Zealand (map)

Weaving a small sea being, a mermaid from a ti kōuka leaf is a reminder of our connection to the environment and the weather.

Book a Workshop Session with natural fibre artist Lesa Hepburn:

  • 10am-11.30am

  • 12pm-1.30pm

  • 2pm -3.30pm

Ti kōuka grows plentifully in the Tomahawk & Smails Beach area and its leaves provide a useful weaving resource. Ti kōuka leaves are known for their toughness (not good for mowers) and water resistance making them valuable for certain woven items. .

The ti kōuka leaves have a form reminiscent of a sea creature’s tail and streamlined body.

Mermaids and other semi-human beings of the sea are known across a wide range of cultures and there are tales of the bad weather and other misfortunes that come from disrespecting these beings.

This workshop enables participants to make a mermaid woven from a ti kōuka leaf.

Designed for Adults and children (10+ years)

Cost: $20/person (10 places/workshop)
